We made it to our camp for our stay in Alpine to find we could not fit in the campsite due to short wide trees. The one other camp in town was full (it's constant state this time of year) so we decided to just park in the campground field-actually worked out fantastic for the view.
On top of Hancock Hill sits a school desk placed there in 1981 by Sul Ross University students who wanted a quiet place to study away from others; the view, however probably distracted them. One of the students, Jim Kitchen, left a notebook in the desk and soon the tradition of visiting the desk and leaving a note in the book began. The notebooks are in the Archives of the Big bend in the school library.
A short distance from the Desk is another display of college student shenanigans.
The directions to the Desk are interesting and not too reliable.
To reach The Desk, take Entrance 4, drive to the top, turn left and park at the highest point behind Mountainside dorm. Look for a trail heading uphill and continue climbing to a rock pile at the top and then follow the trail to The Desk. Allow 20 minutes for the hike from the parking lot. Enjoy the view and you are welcome to leave your comments and thoughts in the notebook in The Desk.
It took an hour to get to the desk and only made it because Mark plugged in GPS coordinates he found online :)
A few of the several rock piles at the top. BTW there were multiple trails around "hill" and deciding which to take was challenging.
A rare flat part of the trail
View of Alpine and Sul Ross University
Bluebells that blanket the area
Another rock pile to decide which path to follow around.
