Caballo Lake is a reservoir on the Rio Grande in southern New Mexico. The lake is used for recreational water activities, a rest stop for migratory birds on their travels, and has a nice backdrop of the Caballo Mountains. We stayed in one of the developed campgrounds but were surprised to find excellent locations for boondocking in the park. The park was so wonderful we almost cancelled our next stop to stay a few more days. We will be back to visit! Boondocking for sure.

We stayed at the Stallion Campground, one of four campgrounds that have utility hook-ups. There are other options for camping at the massive park. Boondocking is available on the beach, on Percha Flats, riverside, and in an overflow parking lot at the boat ramp. The site was spacious, with a covered and walled picnic table area. We had an awesome view of the Caballo mountains with sunrise at our front window.

If you look very closely you can see quail running along between bushes. They were very lively at sunrise but it is hard to get a picture when walking a bird crazed dog.
